Tom Nethersole emerges with new coming-of-age EP:
Father, Son & the space in between

Out October 23, Father, Son & the space in between arrives on the milestone of his father’s 60th birthday, an eight track portrait of boyhood in rural Australia and the stories we inherit, resist and rewrite

UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL OCTOBER 23

Pop artist Tom Nethersole, now based in Melbourne/Naarm and raised in Shepparton, revisits the moments that shaped his youth.
From kitchen tables to school buses to late night highway drives, he reckons with ideas of family legacies and freeing ourselves from the shackles of those who raised us

The number eight threads through the record like fate: eight songs, born on the 8th of December, losing his mum at just eight years old.
For Tom, it symbolises beginnings and endings, life and death - the same tensions that shape the EP.

“This project is about origins” he says,
“It’s my way of making sense of the nights that dictate our days.”
Key tracks include:
-
Residue: The foundational song that cemented the EP's direction and themes: "It’s the father, the son and the space in between / it’s the hole in my heart that I just let bleed."
-
the bus: a haunting reflection on young queer love, betrayal, and the bittersweet ache of what could have been.
-
Car Crash: A song about returning to people we know will hurt us: "Car crash, and I can't look away. I know it will hurt me, but I don’t touch the brakes."
-
Ardmona Rd: The concluding track, offering a "thick, warm & euphoric release" after wrestling with ghosts
Every track was shaped with queer collaborators and four international producers, bringing depth to the stories that Tom has been carrying for years

“Every piece of art I made after losing my mum seemed infected with this need to feel what I had pushed down earlier on,” he says.
“When I started writing music, healing, vulnerability and honesty seeped into everything. There was no alternative.”
Influences for the record include Ryan Beatty, Noah Kahan and Conan Gray, yet Tom’s voice remains distinct.
Father, Son & the space in between is an act of defiance against silence, against repression, against the idea that pain should be buried and forgotten.
It’s a mosaic of moments, stitched together into something fragile yet resilient; hopeful for new beginnings.

Tom has already established himself as a must-watch talent, performing at Midsumma’s Pride Street Party, Rockhampton River Festival, Always Live, and opening for Drax Project & RARIA on their Melbourne Tour Shows. He’s been featured on Rolling Stone’s “Best Australian Music of the Week”, as well as PRISM on Triple J, JOY FM, FBi Radio, Rhythm Club FM, and SYN.

With over 350k streams and a growing fanbase in Australia and the US, Tom Nethersole is cementing himself as a powerful new voice in Australian pop.
